The Role of the SENDCo: Ensuring Quality Support for Every Student

March 03, 2025

The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) plays a pivotal role in ensuring that students with SEND receive the appropriate support they need to thrive in school. In fact, the SENDCo is the driving force behind a school’s efforts to create an inclusive, accessible learning environment. Their responsibilities are both wide-ranging and crucial to the success of SEND provision.

At the heart of the SENDCo’s role is the management of the school’s SEND policy. This includes overseeing the identification of students with special educational needs, coordinating the support they receive, and ensuring that staff are equipped to meet those needs effectively. The SENDCo works closely with a variety of stakeholders, including teachers, parents, external agencies, and the students themselves, to ensure that a child’s needs are understood and met.

A key responsibility of the SENDCo is to ensure that the school follows the graduated approach to support, which includes stages of Assess, Plan, Do, Review. This approach ensures that every child’s progress is monitored and that the support provided is tailored to their individual needs. The SENDCo is also involved in preparing and maintaining the SEND Register, a vital document that tracks the needs and progress of all students receiving SEND support.

In addition to working with staff and parents, SENDCos must also stay informed about the latest legislation and guidance relating to SEND, ensuring that the school is compliant with legal requirements. This includes understanding the Equality Act 2010 and the Children and Families Act 2014, both of which guide the rights of students with SEND and the responsibilities of schools. The SENDCo is essential in ensuring that schools meet their legal obligations in these areas, safeguarding the rights of students and ensuring fair access to education.

An effective SENDCo not only ensures compliance but also works towards creating a school culture that values inclusivity. They provide advice and support on Quality First Teaching strategies, helping teachers adapt their classroom practices to accommodate the diverse needs of all learners. By fostering a collaborative environment, the SENDCo plays a vital role in empowering students with SEND to achieve their full potential.
