Course Introduction

Early intervention can significantly improve reading and writing skills in individuals with dyslexia, leading to greater academic success and improved self-esteem. By providing targeted support tailored to their specific needs, individuals with dyslexia can develop effective coping strategies and overcome challenges in literacy.

This course is designed to offer two options:

  • Level 5 Full Programme Comprising 2 modules with a completion time of 1 years
  • Level 7 Full Programme: Comprising 4 modules with a completion time of 2 years.
  • Level 7 Top Up Programme: For those with a Level 5 qualification in Dyslexia and Associate Teacher Status (ATS). Exempts you from Module 1 and 2, with a completion time of 12 months.

Course Developer: Kate Davies, with 25 years in education, co-developer of PGCert in Dyslexia, PGCert and PGDip in Dyscalculia.

The programme will examine many areas including:

  • The latest research on SpLD dyslexia and its relation to national policy issues, curriculum, and relevance to teaching and learning within the framework of the role and practice of a specialist teacher SpLD.
  • Defining the ways in which students with dyslexia and literacy difficulties differ, as well as the barriers that lead to both.
  • Dyslexia screeners, intervention programmes, and teaching methods for learners.
  • Planning effective lessons.
  • Social and emotional consequences of dyslexia and how to support this.
  • Administration and interpretation of psychometric tests.
  • Diagnostic assessment and report writing.

    Detailed Course Information

    Course Lead Tutor Kate Davies BA Hons, PGCERT FE/HE, PGCERT/PGDIP Dyslexia AMBDA, AMBDAD Dyscalculia, APC, and MA Special Educational Needs.

    Course Developer Kate Davies has been working in the education profession for 25 years. In her role as a Lecturer in Inclusion for Edgehill University, Kate co-developed the PGCert in Dyslexia, PGCert and PGDip in Dyscalculia. She was one of the first lecturers to deliver Dyscalculia courses in the country and has qualified many SpLD specialist teachers throughout the UK and internationally.

    Participants are expected to engage with all the online content and to complete the activities and assessments detailed in the course materials.
    The course will have various start dates throughout the year with the first cohort having started in July 2020.
    New cohorts will be starting at the beginning of August, September and October. Thereafter the start dates will depend on demand.
    Level 5 participants will have 12 months from the commencement of the course to submit their final assignment. 
    Level 3 participants will have 6 months from the commencement of the course to submit their final assignment. 
    You can also complete the course in a shorter time frame if you prefer.
    If you are undertaking the Level 5 course you will need to have a current DBS certificate.

    If your circumstances change and you need extra time, this can be arranged via discussion with Steve and Judy.
